Worldwide learning at Siemens Industry Automation and Drive Technologies
Siemens Industry Automation, a supplier of production and process automation with around 83,000 employees worldwide, has rolled out a computer-based learning solution. The solution will enable Siemens’ Industry Automation and Drive Technologies divisions to achieve a consistent level of knowledge worldwide in relation to the company’s product portfolio, the market position and the business strategy. Implementation was completed through existing standard channels and network structures in an extremely short period of time.
A company that is constantly looking to expand into new markets with success needs its employees to have a shared base of information and knowledge. Top management of Industry Automation and Drive Technologies therefore decided to introduce a multi-country learning programme: German-, English-, Spanish- and Chinese-language versions were developed and distributed to employees worldwide.

The learning programme was produced as a computer-based training course and made available to all employees with access to the Siemens intranet. Different distribution mechanisms were developed by the IT departments in charge of the project. This team centrally managed installations on local PCs, CDs and WBT’s, using whichever means  possible to reach every employee.

'Different forms of delivery combined with integration into the existing IT landscape was, from an IT point of view, the key success factor', says IT manager Andreas Scherpe. Supported by consistent prioritisation and tight project coordination from J&M, the company succeeded in completing the roll-out in less than a year. Approximately 53,000 employees, with intranet access and e-mail addresses can now study both on- and offline and once they have sat a final test, receive their personal certificate automatically via e-mail.

Just two weeks after the beginning of the roll-out, over 30 per cent of the 53,000 users had commenced their training. The number of active users has now risen to 21,000, of whom 16,500 have already completed the Industry Learning Program with certification. 'The project is having a powerful impact on our employees. This company wide on- and offline solution allows them to conveniently gain important know-how and use it in their area of responsibility', reports Cornelia Bunk, overall project manager.

The learning program is to be continually developed, with the aim of promptly making available to employees of the Siemens Industry Automation and Drive Technologies divisions, all the latest information.
